Nurse Lucille (played by Leonie Elliot) and Cyril’s (Zephryn Taitte) romance began as a slow burner, but they are finally set to wed during the Christmas special of Call the Midwife. However, things won’t go smoothly in the run up to the big day with Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) forced to step in and help the young couple make it down the aisle.

Whilst preparing for her big day, Lucille suffers a facial injury and she fears her big day is ruined.

It will be up to Dr Turner to save the day and stop the wedding from being called off.

He will use the 19th-century art of leech therapy to help suck the wound clean and begin healing.

Speaking of using the leeches, Stephen remarked it was extremely hard to work with.

He joked: “They got more care taken of them than the actors.

“They come in a little jar, they’d say, ‘Bring on the leeches,’ and the leech wrangler comes in with tweezers.”

He also explained if the leeches were to have touched actress Leonie’s skin, they would have latched on and started sucking her blood.

Stephen added: “It could’ve gone incredibly wrong but it was very funny.”

Meanwhile, Heidi Thomas, the show’s creator, noted it was “quite extraordinary” to see the wedding unfold.

She laughed: “I had a hissy fit when I saw some of the photographs of the suits.

“I was like, ‘It’s not a real wedding’ but it felt like one. It was lovely, it was really beautiful.”

The Christmas special will run for 90 minutes on BBC One and involve East End gangsters and a heroin addiction.
