Congressman Henry Cuellar Unharmed After Armed Carjacking in D.C.

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) was carjacked about a mile from the U.S. Capitol on Monday night.

Cuellar was parking his car outside of his apartment in the Navy Yard area of Southeast D.C when three armed individuals approached the congressman and stole his vehicle.

“As Congressman Cuellar was parking his car this evening, 3 armed assailants approached the Congressman and stole his vehicle,” his chief of staff said in a statement. “Thank you to Metro PD and Capitol Police for their swift action and for recovering the Congressman’s vehicle.”

His chief of staff confirmed that Cuellar was not injured.

According to the city’s Metropolitan Police Department, an armed carjacking was reported at approximately 9:32 p.m. Victim information was not provided.

This is not the first time a member of Congress has been the victim of a carjacking. In December 2021, Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) was carjacked at gunpoint in Philadelphia.

Cuellar has represented Texas’ 28th Congressional District, which encompasses the Rio Grande Valley along the U.S.-Mexico border, since 2005. Prior to that, he briefly served as Secretary of State under then-Gov. Rick Perry, and was a member of the Texas House of Representatives for 14 years beginning in 1987.

In 2022, Nancy Pelosi announced her support for Cuellar ahead of a runoff election later in May last year, despite pressure from pro-choice advocates who point out that Cuellar is the only Democrat in the House who opposes abortion. Pelosi called Cuellar “a valued member of our caucus” at the time.

This is a developing story.
