With the cost of living crisis still affecting families, it can be a good idea to shop around to find a bargain. This rule even applies to food, as the cost of kitchen staples can vary wildly depending on where you shop.
In a hunt to find cheaper burgers, Darcey Barrett, from BristolLive, set out to try Westlers tinned burgers in onion gravy. Having seen a man tasting them on TikTok, she decided to give them a go. Here is how she got on:
At first, Darcey attempted to buy the tinned burgers at her local Home Bargains store but soon found there were no tins on sale. Instead, she headed down to Asda where she found a tin of four for £1.49.
According to the label, the burgers and their gravy can be cooked in two ways – either in the microwave or on the hob. As they are pre-cooked, the burgers don’t take long and can be a convenient meal. However, when she opened the tin, Darcey found her first hint she was not going to like her burgers.
“Upon opening the tin I was hit with a very strong onion smell, which I was not the biggest fan of, making my kitchen stink,” she said. “The sight I was met with wasn’t very pretty either, covered in a lot of sauce, the burgers didn’t look overly appealing but I was still going to try them to see what they were like.”
Following the instructions on the tin, she then microwaved the burgers for a couple of minutes. She then had to take the meal out of the microwave to give the gravy a stir before reheating it.
“What I got at the end of the cooking time was not dissimilar to what I put into the microwave, just heated up. Taking my first tentative bite, I found they weren’t as hideous as I thought they were going to be based on the smell, but they definitely weren’t great. If you’re looking for a cheap alternative to a burger, then these are not it, they don’t taste or have the texture of a burger at all.”
She wasn’t a fan of the burgers at all. They seemed to overwhelm her senses.
“I found them to be very mushy and I just couldn’t get over the smell,” she concluded. “While some may love these, I’m definitely not a fan and I will not be rushing to try them again any time soon.”
