India are all set to take on Sri Lanka in the team’s second match of the Super Four round of the Asia Cup 2023.
The Men in Blue will be taking the field for the third day in a row, after playing against Pakistan on Sunday and Monday, recording a massive 228-run win. India will be hoping for more of the same from their batters, all of whom have scored big in the last few innings.
However, Sri Lanka will not be easy to beat. The hosts are on a 13-match winning run in ODIs, with their latest win coming against Bangladesh on 9 September. They were given a boost in that game as No 4 batter Sadeera Samarawickrama stepped up to deliver a brilliant 93-run knock.
This promises to be a mouthwatering clash, and India could rotate a few players owing to the heavy workload of late.

7:47pm- WICKET! Bumrah strikes early as he gets Pathum Nissanka. Sri Lanka 7/1.
7:27pm- So, India finish on 213. It was a promising start, as the openers got off the blocks quickly but credit has to go to the youngster Dunith Wellalage for his exceptional spell today, ably supported by part-timer Charith Asalanka.
The pitch is definitely slow and turning, so India certainly have a chance of defending this total but we will have to wait and see whether the rain and dew (if any) will make the ball skid and make it difficult for India’s spinners to grip the ball.
7:25pm- WICKET! There’s the end of the innings. Axar Patel comes down the track and tries to lift this over long on, but he ends up holing out to Samarawickrama off the bowling of Theekshana, for a potentially crucial innings of 26. India 213 in 49.1 overs (Siraj 5*).
7:03pm- The umpires are out on the ground to check the condition, and a pitch inspection is officially scheduled for 7:05pm. Update: Play is set to restart at 7:15pm.
6:56pm- The covers are coming off fairly swiftly, and because there is minimal drying of the outfield required, the match should be able to start soon.
6:38pm- Positive signs as the rain has stopped, and the clouds appear to be clearing from the ground. Hopefully, we will be underway soon.
6:25pm- PLAY INTERRUPTED DUE TO RAIN- Oh dear. This was by no means unexpected, but the rain has started to fall, and the covers are coming on. It is just a drizzle, so hopefully this is just a short delay. India are yet to play an uninterrupted match at this Asia Cup, but the way this innings has gone, you’d forgive them for thanking the rain. India 197/9 in 47 overs (Axar 15*, Siraj 2*).
6:15pm- It’s just a matter of batting out the 50 overs for India now. Sri Lanka will be fancying their chances of winning this game now, but bear in mind that India also have three spinners to turn to. India 191/9 in 45 overs (Axar 11*, Siraj 0*).
6:02pm- WICKET! Two in two for Asalanka! This one is quicker and flatter. It turns just enough for Kuldeep to hang his bat out, and the catch is taken at slip. Mohammed Siraj is the last man in. India 186/9 in 42.2 overs (Axar 7*, Siraj 0*).
6:01pm- WICKET! Asalanka has a third, and the part-timer is having a ball! Tosses this up beautifully outside off-stump, Bumrah goes for the booming drive but it turns and knocks back his off-stump. He’s gone for 5. here comes Kuldeep Yadav. India 186/8 in 42.1 overs (Axar 7*, Kuldeep 0*).
5:39pm- WICKET! Wellalage has FIVE! Hardik Pandya playing the front-foot defence, but the turn from the wicket is enough to catch the faintest of edges through to the keeper. That’s the end of Wellalage’s spell, and what a spell it has been, 5/40. In comes Axar Patel. India 172/6 in 36 overs (Axar 0*, Jadeja 2*).
5:31pm- WICKET! Charith Asalanka was brought into the attack a few overs ago, and he strikes now. Attempting to break the shackles, Ishan Kishan tries to cream this one over mid-off but it’s that man Wellalage who times his jump well to pluck it out of the air at covers and send him back for 33. In comes Ravindra Jadeja. India 170/5 in 34.2 overs (Pandya 5*, Jadeja 0*).
5:11pm- WICKET! Four for Wellalage! KL Rahul went on the back foot, but the ball stopped on him, just like it did for Virat Kohli. He’s just lobbed it back to the bowler for a simple catch, and goes for 39. Control firmly with Sri Lanka now, and Hardik Pandya will be the new man in. India 154/4 in 30 overs (Pandya 0*, Kishan 23*).
4:49pm- It’s been tough going for India in the last 10 overs or so. Wellalage has been taken out of the attack but both de Silva and Theekshana are keeping the batters on a tight leash. This may not be too high-scoring a game by the looks of things currently. India 128/3 in 25 overs (Rahul 18*, Kishan 18*).
4:31pm- That three-wicket blitz from Wellalage has well and truly helped Sri Lanka rein the run-rate in here. Dhananjaya de Silva has backed him up well, and the two have bowled a total of 8 overs for just 21 runs. Rahul and Kishan are starting to rebuild the innings for India. India 109/3 in 20 overs (Rahul 7*, Kishan 11*).
4:14pm- WICKET! Wellalage is running through India here! The arm ball this time, goes in with the angle and stays low, beating Rohit Sharma all ends up. He’s gone for 53, and now things are starting to look shaky. KL Rahul comes to the wicket. India 91/3 in 15.1 overs (Rahul 0*, Kishan 0*).
4:12pm- So after that fantastic first ten overs for India, Dunith Wellalage has single-handedly started applying the brakes on the innings. His two overs have seen him dismiss Gill and Kohli, but Rohit Sharma is still out in the middle, and looking good. India 91/2 in 15 overs (Rohit 53*, Kishan 0*).
4:06pm- WICKET! Wellalage again! And this time it’s the big fish Kohli! There’s been grip and turn so far. This ball was short of a length, and Kohli was through the shot early. Lobs it up to Shanaka at midwicket. Kohli scored a century yesterday, but he’s gone for 3 today. Ishan Kishan is in at No 4 today. India 90/2 in 13.5 overs (Rohit 52*, Kishan 0*).
3:54pm- WICKET! Wellalage strikes with his first ball! The perfect left-arm spinner’s dismissal! Drift in to the batter, grip, turn and timber as the off stump is knocked back. Shubman Gill playing all round that one, and goes for 19. In comes Virat Kohli. India 80/1 in 11.1 overs (Rohit 47*, Kohli 0*).
3:45pm- Rohit threatened to break free in the seventh over when India got 12 runs, and then took the initiative against Dasun Shanaka, hitting him for four boundaries in the final over of the Powerplay. You do get the feeling that Sri Lanka need to strike soon, before Rohit and Gill really dig their heels in here. India 65/0 in 10 overs (Rohit 39*, Gill 18*).
3:20pm- India haven’t made the same blistering start as they did on Sunday, but they have played positively. It is a slower wicket today, and Rajitha and Theekshana have maintained a disciplined stump-to-stump line so far. But as is usual by now, both Rohit and Gill look solid. India 25/0 in 5 overs (Rohit 12*, Gill 12*).
3:01pm- Here we go, India vs Sri Lanka with a spot in the Asia Cup final all but assured for the winner today (unless that winner is rain, but it is blazing hot for now). Rohit Sharma on strike, to face the first ball from Kasun Rajitha. On a length outside off, left alone. India 0/0 in 0.1 overs (Rohit 0*, Gill 0*).
