Lady Gaga photographed in costume as Harley Quinn for the Joker sequel

Given her reputation for bold and zany looks, this could have been just another day for Lady Gaga.

But this picture gives the first glimpse of the singer and actor in her new role as comic book villain Harley Quinn.

The star donned a bright red blazer, leather miniskirt, torn stockings and clownlike eye make-up for her role in the hotly anticipated Joker sequel, Folie A Deux.

And fans were delighted. “Oh my God, she fits the role so perfectly — I’m obsessed,” one wrote on Twitter, while another gushed: “The details! The fishnets, the corset. I can’t breathe!”

The 36-year-old was filmed walking down the steps of the New York County Supreme Court, escorted by police while a mob of raucous supporters rallied outside holding “Free The Joker” placards.

The $220 million film is a sequel to 2019’s Joker which won Joaquin Phoenix the best actor Oscar — and took £1 billion at the box office.

Director Todd Phillips has given little away about the new film, due out in October 2024, but has revealed it will contain “complex musical numbers” and is set in Arkham Asylum, where Batman’s criminally insane adversaries are locked up.

A source said: “This isn’t your traditional musical, but there are some big sequences. Fans can’t wait to see Gaga make Harley her own.”

She takes over the role — a psychiatrist who falls in love with mentally-ill clown Arthur Fleck, also known as The Joker — from Margot Robbie.

The Australian actress, who portrayed Quinn in three blockbusters, said she was “thrilled” to see Gaga land the role, adding: “She’s going to do an amazing job.”
