Match your clothes to your eyes to look your best, scientists claim

Colors really do make your eyes pop.

While coordinating your outfit to match your shoes or belt will tie a look together, it’s your eye color that really helps you to look your best.

In fact, it is the strongest factor in coordinating the perfect outfit, according to a study recently published in the journal “Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts.”

“Everyone wants to look their best, but what should guide the choice and color of our clothing?” lead researcher Professor David Perrett said in a statement, voicing the question that fashionistas have been asking for centuries.

To answer that query, researchers from the University of St. Andrews polled nearly 200 people to determine the shades that looked best on individuals with differing skin tones, hair colors and eye colors.

After altering images of the models’ coloring, it was apparent that eye color — and, “surprisingly,” not one’s complexion — is the strongest factor in choosing the perfect outfit, the study concluded.

“We thought that skin tone would be the critical feature as this is stressed in virtually all stylist advice,” revealed Perrett. “Surprisingly, skin color turned out to be unimportant.”

Researchers said that eye color was the primary factor, while complexion was “surprisingly … unimportant.”

Of all the color options reviewed, reds and blues were chosen to be the most favored colored palettes in general but varied depending on who wore what.

It was concluded that gray or blue-eyed people should fill their closets with “cool” blue hues, while those with dark brown eyes should buy more pieces with “warm” orange/red hues.

“We were very surprised at how much agreement there was,” Perrett admitted.

The results of the study found that it was apparent that eye color is the strongest factor in choosing the perfect outfit.

He explained that the results are especially revolutionary as previous research indicated the importance of a person’s complexion for clothing color choice but “did not define the critical aspect of complexion.”

For example, people with a darker complexion are more likely to have darker hair, eyes and skin color.

“Any one of these features could be the basis of clothing color choice,” he noted.

It turns out the eyes are the window to the soul — and your best look.
