Panchkula police have arrested an elderly man for allegedly murdering his daughter-in-law at Khatauli village in Chandimandir on Wednesday.

The accused has been identified as Kashmiri Lal, 72, a farmer.

He was booked for murder based on the statement of his son Vijay Kumar, 49, the husband of the deceased Dayawanti, who was a homemaker in her late 40s.

Kumar told police that an hour before the incident, he was watering his farm using his father’s pipeline.

“My father objected to me using his pipeline and tried to hit me with an axe. I ran back home, but he followed me with the axe in hand. He tried to hit me with the axe and to save me, my wife Dayawanti came in between and it hit her on the neck. He then fled from the spot with the weapon,” he said.

The woman was taken to the civil hospital, where she was declared dead. The accused was sent to judicial custody.
