Is Rihanna giving us a sneak peek at her potential Met Gala 2023 look? While we don’t know for sure if the musician and Fenty Beauty founder is attending the gala this year, given that she’s entering the late stages of her pregnancy, she may have given us a clue about what’s on her mind if she does go with her latest outfit.
As noted by Spanish Vogue, Rihanna was spotted out and about in Paris with her partner A$AP Rocky in a grey crop top, cargo pants, and a patchwork hooded coat from Karl Lagerfeld’s tenure at Fendi, circa 1999. Lagerfeld worked for the Italian fashion house for more than 50 years alongside his own label and, of course, Chanel.
Rihanna’s coat was a full-length style with an oversized hood covered in patches in shades of terracotta, tan, marigold, sage green, and cream. The coat was originally worn on the Fendi runway by the legendary late model Stella Tennant with a turtleneck sweater and slim blue pants. Rih mixed it up in her own way with the belly-baring top, a diamond choker necklace layered with a gold gemstone chain, and a pair of slate grey pointed-toe boots.
Lagerfeld’s life and work will be honoured at the Met Gala on May 1, 2023. The official theme is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” and attendees have a lot to work with, given that Lagerfeld also designed for Balmain, Patou, and Chloé. Penélope Cruz, Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, and tennis star Roger Federer are this year’s co-chairs.
As previously stated, Rihanna isn’t confirmed to be attending this year, but she’s always one of the standout stars on the red carpet when she does stop by. Last year, she was also not able to make the event in person since she was also in the late stages of her first pregnancy at the time, but she managed to make her presence known regardless. That said, we have seen the star more frequently lately, including her Super Bowl and Academy Awards performances, so it’s not entirely off the table that she will be at the Met on May 1 and, if this look is any indication, she could potentially be wearing Fendi?
