Canelo faces Plant for the world undisputed super-middleweight title at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena and says this fight is personal for him
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez claims he will enjoy punishing Caleb Plant because of the animosity between them.
Canelo and Plant clash for the undisputed world super-middleweight title at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena in the early hours of Sunday and the Mexican ring legend says this fight is personal.
He is angry because he feels Plant insulted his family in the build-up to their showdown and the pair traded blows at their first press conference in September.
Canelo took great delight in battering Billy Joe Saunders into submission in May after he spent fight week taunting him over his drugs ban in 2018.
And the unified WBC, WBA Super and WBO champ says he intends to revel in beating up the undefeated Plant, who holds the IBF belt.
“Yeah, I’m going to enjoy it a lot, just watch,” he smiled.
“I enjoyed what I did to Saunders so much, so much. I enjoyed it so much, he deserved it.”
Canelo, 31, has already won world titles at four different weights and wants to become undisputed at 168lbs to enhance his legacy.
He grew up in Guadalajara idolising Mexican ring legends Gilberto Roman and Julio Cesar Chavez and aims to write his name alongside theirs in the pantheon of greats.
“One of my favourite fighters in Mexico was Gilberto Roman and Julio Cesar Chavez for sure,” he said.
“I’m just happy to make my own history and we’ll see at the end of my career where I finish. But I would love to be one of the best for sure.
“This is one of the most-important fights of my career, that’s for sure.
“I feel so good because that’s what I want for my legacy. I’m really happy.”
Canelo looked chilled as he spoke in his improving English and says he has been practising while playing golf and cards with his pals.
He loves to relax when he is not in the gym by playing golf and has become a dab hand with the clubs.
Canelo’s attitude to golf and learning English sum up his competitiveness and he wants to excel in everything he does.
“Everything I try, I do it 100 per cent and I’m good,” he said.
“You just need practice, practice and training.
“I make a lot of mistakes speaking English, but I don’t care because I try to do my best.
“I speak a lot of English with my friends when I play golf, when I play cards in San Diego. I practise a lot then I am more confident.
“I don’t care if I make a mistake as long as I learn from it and move forward because you are richer for it.”
