UFC Vegas 43: Sean Brady defeated Michael Chiesa to remain undefeated.
Sean Brady defeated Michael Chiesa via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28), at UFC Vegas 43 on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021, live from UFC APEX in Las Vegas, NV.
“All week I was saying how the pressure wasn’t getting to me. It was getting to fight. It was a big deal… I knew he was going to be tough… I want one of these main events that everyone keeps getting. I want to prove that I can go five rounds. I want a top-five guy, a top 10 guy,” said Brady, who refused to give Daniel Cormier any names of who he would like to fight next, despite being asked twice.
The fighters touched gloves to get the first round underway. Chiesa took the center of the Octagon, while Brady circled on the outside. Only 35 seconds into the fight, the fight was stopped for an eye poke from Chiesa. Immediately, Chiesa apologized. The fight restarted, with Brady attacking with a series of leg kicks. Chiesa landed a straight left but Brady fired back with a combination. The fight was stopped following a second eye poke from Chiesa. Referee Herb Dean warned Chiesa for the foul. The fight restarted again. Brady caught a leg kick to the body from Chiesa and took Chiesa down. Up against the fence, Chiesa was able to get back to his feet. While in the clinch, the two fighters started talking to each other with Chiesa telling Brady how strong he was. Brady picked up a single leg and brought Chiesa down again. Brady’s nose started to bleed following a cross from Chiesa, with the fighters returning to their feet. Chiesa landed a straight left but Brady continued to come back with low leg kicks.
The second round started with Chiesa being much more aggressive, throwing several faints, and then unloading a three-punch combination. The two fighters continued in the middle of the Octagon, with two fighters landing. Chiesa came back with another left hand. Brady ate a left cross but came right back with a right hand that backed up Chiesa. Brady went for a takedown but Chiesa was able to get back against the fence to fend off the takedown. Chiesa flipped position and landed a trio of knees to the body. Brady flipped position and landed the takedown. Brady got both of his hooks in and tried to go for a submission. Chiesa was able to defend the submission attempts but spent the majority of the round playing defense.
Chiesa entered the final round, knowing that he had lost the first two rounds. Chiesa came out and landed a strong flying knee to the body in the first 30 seconds of the round. Brady came forward and landed a right hand. Chiesa landed another left cross and then a three-punch combination. Brady was able to slow Chiesa’s moment, going for another takedown and eventually getting it. Brady took Chiesa’s back, got his hooks in, and looked for another submission. Chiesa was able to break free and started attacking. Chiesa landed a massive knee to the body, eventually landing a takedown. The round ended with Chiesa reigning down strikes on Brady, who was covering up until the final horn saved him.
Brady entered Saturday’s fight with an undefeated record, winning his first four fights in the UFC. In his last two fights, Brady submitted Jake Matthews and Christian Aguilera. The back-to-back submission victories helped Brady break into the UFC’s top 15 rankings. Brady entered the Octagon on Saturday as the 14th ranked welterweight. After picking up the biggest win of his career, the UFC could attach the rocket to Brady and give him one of the top five ranked fighters.
Chiesa won his first four fights at welterweight. In his last fight, Chiesa was submitted in the first round by Vicente Luque. The loss dropped Chiesa to sixth in the UFC’s welterweight rankings. Following his second straight loss in the division, Chiesa will have to bounce back in his next fight.
