5-star recruit has Michigan among finalists, will announce Sunday

A five-star recruit will announce his college choice on Sunday, and Michigan is among the three finalists.

Khani Rooths, ranked No. 25 overall in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports composite, will decide among Michigan, Georgia, and Florida State. The 6-foot-8 small forward plays for powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, the same program that produced recent Wolverines Jett Howard and Moussa Diabaté.

Rooths started his high school career at Georgetown Prep and is from Washington, D.C. Michigan head coach Juwan Howard has had success recruiting that area, bringing in Hunter Dickinson, Terrance Williams II, Dug McDaniel the last few years.

Some recruiting experts believe Rooths will choose Georgia, while at least one other with an impressive track record thinks it will be Michigan.

Rooths visited Michigan last weekend, posting photos from the visit on social media, including one with Howard, who remains sidelined after offseason heart surgery.

“Michigan is a great school and Coach Juwan is a big reason they are in the running, especially having two wings drafted,” Rooths told On3 recently, referring to Jett Howard and Kobe Bufkin, both of whom were taken in the top 15 of June’s NBA draft.

Per On3′s Jamie Shaw, “Rooths has a great frame and great length with real positional size. The ball skills are developing; however, he is getting more confident with the ball in his hands. His mid-post/mid-range game is getting more dangerous. He will knock down some spot threes, and he can get downhill off the bounce.

“Defensively, Rooths is really intriguing. He can slide his feet with guards at the point of attack, disrupt the passing lanes, and he has the length and size to switch down to guard forwards.”

According to an ESPN report, Rooths will announce his decision on Sunday at noon ET via Instagram Live.

Michigan already has two players for its 2024 class, guards Christian Anderson Jr. and Durral Brooks, both of whom signed on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period.

The Wolverines are 1-0 this season and host Youngstown State on Friday night.
