TALLAHASSEE — The popular state program that gives Floridians $10,000 to harden their homes is taking new applicants.
The Department of Financial Services on Monday reopened applications for the My Safe Florida Home program, which gives free home inspections and cash to upgrade windows, exterior doors and garage doors and strengthen roofs.
Owners of houses and townhomes can apply online at mysafeflhome.com.
The program was restarted by the Legislature in 2022 but ran out of money before the fiscal year ended. Lawmakers this year added another $200 million.
The program offers free inspections. And the state provides $2 for every dollar a homeowner spends on qualifying upgrades, up to $10,000.
It applies to homes valued up to $700,000 with homestead exemptions.
Unlike past years, this year’s funding prioritizes senior citizens and low-income residents.
Here are the groups of prioritized applicants and when they can apply:
- Low-income homeowners 60 and older: July 1–July 15
- Low-income homeowners of any age: July 16–30
- Moderate-income homeowners 60 and older: July 31–Aug. 14
- Moderate-income homeowners of any age: Aug. 15–29
- All other eligible Florida homeowners: Aug. 31
Lawmakers this year also created a pilot program for condominium owners associations, but it wasn’t clear when the state would start applications for it.
