Dallas Mavericks Trade Tim Hardaway Jr. To Detroit Pistons For Quentin Grimes

The Dallas Mavericks are making moves to bolster their backcourt. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the team traded veteran Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round draft picks to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for shooting guard Quentin Grimes.

Wojnarowski notes that the second-round picks are a 2025 selection via the Toronto Raptors and two in 2028.

Swapping Hardaway for Grimes gives Dallas some financial flexibility. According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, it allows the team to offer Derrick Jones Jr. a significant part of the $12.9M nontaxpayer midlevel exception. Re-signing Jones is a top priority for Mavericks GM Nico Harrison.

Grimes signed a guaranteed four-year, $11.1 million contract with the New York Knicks in 2021. He is entering the final season of his current contract and will earn $4.2 million next season. He is eligible for a contract extension before the start of the season.

Hardaway signed a four-year, $75 million descending value contract with the Mavericks in 2021. He will earn $16.1 million with the Pistons during the 2024-25 season. He becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Grimes, 24, spent last season with the Knicks and Pistons. In February, New York traded him to Detroit in a deal that sent Bojan Bogdanovic to the Knicks.

Grimes only appeared in six games with the Pistons before missing the remainder of the season to rehabilitate lingering muscle soreness related to a bone bruise injury in his knee that he sustained in January.

In his third NBA season, Grimes played in 51 games between the Knicks and Pistons. He averaged 7.0 points on 37.2% shooting, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

Hardaway, 32, found himself out of the rotation during the latter part of Dallas’ season and run to the NBA Finals. He appeared in 79 regular season games and 14 playoff games. He averaged 14.4 points on 40.2% shooting, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists during the regular season and 4.4 points on 37.9% shooting and 1.8 rebounds in the playoffs.
