Destiny 2’s ‘Final Shape’ Pre-Load Requires 300 GB On PC

If you are prepping your PC for the launch of Destiny 2’s The Final Shape, it’s going to take more than just making sure your graphics drivers are up to date. In order to install the DLC you will need 300 GB free on your computer, where for SSDs in particular is a tall order for many.

We actually know the file size for all platforms’ pre-load, which is still hefty everywhere, but Steam is the highest (via GamePost):

  • PS4: 129.31 GB
  • PS5: 143.81 GB
  • Xbox One: 139.52 GB
  • Xbox Series S/X: 165.82 GB
  • Steam: 299.70 GB
  • EGS: 279.66 GB
  • Microsoft Store: 156.22 GB

So, there’s a catch here. It’s not quite as bad as it sounds. The size of the game is not increasing to 300 GB on Steam, this is just what you need to pre-load. The reason being is that for pre-loading on Steam, you are essentially storing two versions of the game at once, more than doubling the size in total. The total filesize for The Final Shape + current Destiny 2 is reportedly 155.5 GB, so half of the total will be freed up after the actual launch of the game. Alternatively, when the Final Shape patch drops, you can uninstall the game and reinstall it so it won’t need to hold two versions (at least I think this works).

Still 155 GB isn’t nothing, nor is clearing out so many GB for the pre-load if you want to do that. I have quite literally uninstalled essentially every game on my PC except Destiny 2, Diablo 4 and Fortnite (which I need to keep up for live news events in that game). That’s meant bye-bye Helldivers 2, Suicide Squad, Starfield, Cyberpunk and others that have been sitting idle at least somewhat for a while now. But again, once this launches, you can fill up half that space again.

Destiny 2’s ballooning size was one reason that Bungie gave for the concept of the content vault, which removed old story content and destinations. Even as some things have been put back, we’re still missing entire planets and campaign, plus every season but the last three, and if all that was still there? That 300 GB may indeed be the total size. So you can see how that’s sort of an issue.

As for The Final Shape, it is dramatically increasing the size of the game, meaning the scope of the DLC, which is not fully known, may be larger than anticipated. Or it’s from a bunch of cutscenes, we’ll see. But yes, start clearing room, you need it.
