Donald Glover gave fans a double dose of surprises on Monday by unexpectedly dropping his fifth studio album, “Atavista,” under his musical moniker, Childish Gambino, as well as announcing a new tour that’s slated to stop in Boston this summer.
“Atavista,” according to the actor, rapper, and comedian, is the finished, more polished version of Glover’s “3.15.20,″ the album he put out four years ago, and includes a number of songs that are sonically similar, if not the same, to the 2020 album. The musician also plans to drop a special vinyl with visuals for each song soon, he wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

In the same post, the “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” star said to expect an all-new album later this summer. Glover previously stated that the upcoming album will be his last under his Childish Gambino pseudonym — “a soundtrack for the fans,” he said recently on his radio show, “Gilga,” which would also serve as the soundtrack for his upcoming film “Bando Storm and the New World.”
“Atavista” features a number of notable names, including Ariana Grande, 21 Savage, Ink, Kadhja Bonet, Summer Walker, and Young Nudy. Glover also released a black-and-white music video accompanying ”Little Foot Big Foot” (formerly “35.21” on “3.15.20″), which features a cameo from Emmy-winning “Abbott Elementary” star Quinta Brunson.
“The New World Tour,” Glover’s first tour since 2019, starts in Oklahoma Aug. 11 and takes him across the US and Canada through the summer and into the fall, including a return to Boston’s TD Garden Aug. 23. He’ll then head overseas to Europe and Australia at the end of 2024 into the beginning of 2025.
Actress and singer Willow Smith, stage name Willow, and R&B singer Amaarae will appear during the tour as well, with Willow taking the stage during the North American leg and Amaarae trailing Glover overseas.
Tickets for “The New World Tour” go on sale Wednesday at 10 a.m. on ticketmaster.com.
