Las Vegas (KSNV) — Homicide detectives are investigating a fatal stabbing that happened Tuesday afternoon near East Charleston and Pecos.
Investigators believe a group of men took matters into their own hands when a woman was being sexually assaulted.
“He held her against her own will,” says one witness who asked not to be identified. “And that’s when we tried to force that guy out of that shack, and he didn’t want to come out. So, we all went in there and got him.”
The witness says a woman was screaming for help from inside a shed.
As many as seven people rushed over to help.
“I felt it was my job yesterday to defend that lady,” says the witness. “And that’s what happened. I didn’t know the guy was going to die, but it happened.”
He says he did not see or even know the man had been stabbed.
“This happened after I had left,” he explains. “I went my way. Everybody went their way, but I didn’t know the guy had stabbed him at the last minute.”
Amairani Rangel works at a smoke shop steps from the scene.
He says a customer came in to tell her what happened.
“I was right here cleaning the shop, and I saw a cop pull in,” she says.
Rangel calls it a scary situation but does not worry about her safety in the neighborhood.
“Everything was done with good intentions,” she says. “It’s sad that someone had to pass away.”
As for police, they say the investigation is just beginning, and they’re hoping witnesses will come forward.
“We’re also reviewing surveillance footage,” says LVMPD Homicide Lt. Jason Johannson. “The males that came to her aid left. We do not know who they are, but we’re taking steps to identify them so we can interview them and ascertain everything that occurred.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, no arrests had been made.
“I have nieces, I have nephews, I have a daughter,” says the witness. “I would hate for that to happen to them. So out of a man’s perspective, that was for us to defend her like that, and that’s what happened.”
