Mass. man dies after fiery rollover crash at toll plaza on I-95 in Hampton, N.H.

A Massachusetts man died after the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a concrete barrier at a toll plaza on Interstate 95 in New Hampshire, rolled over, and caught fire on Saturday evening, authorities said.

Around 5:40 p.m., Nicholas D. Killinger, 44, of Wilbraham, drove a 2013 Ford F-250 into the cash toll collection area of the Hampton toll plaza while traveling south on I-95, New Hampshire State Police said in a statement. Killinger then, for reasons that are under investigation, lost control of the pickup and crashed intro a concrete barrier in front of one of the toll booths, according to the statement.

After striking the barrier, the truck rolled over and came to rest on the driver’s side, according to the statement. When troopers arrived at the crash scene, they found the truck on fire with Killinger still trapped inside, unconscious, according to the statement. State troopers, with the help of bystanders at the scene, used fire extinguishers to quell the flames until firefighters arrived and fully extinguished the burning truck, according to the statement.

Killinger died at the scene, police said. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and no other injuries were reported.

The crash remains under investigation.

The death is the latest in a string of crashes at the Hampton toll plaza. Just two days earlier a man from North Andover and a passenger were injured after losing control of their vehicle and striking a concrete barrier on the northbound side of the toll plaza. The cause of that crash was also not clear, according to statements from State Police. And in late March, a father and son were taken to the hospital after “suddenly changing lanes” and crashing into a barrier on the northbound side of the plaza.
