‘My goal is to fight Canelo’: Christian Mbilli calls out Alvarez

Christian Mbilli made a challenge to Canelo Alvarez after doing the business expected tonight in Quebec, dominating Rohan Murdock and earning a corner stoppage win after six rounds.

Mbilli, 28, is ranked No. 1 by the WBC and WBA, and has Canelo on his mind, calling himself “the future” of the 168 lb division.

Canelo is, of course, undisputed super middleweight champion, holding the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO titles.

“I know Canelo is the best. Everyone knows that,” Mbilli said. “I want to show I am the best of the division. My goal is to fight Canelo. I will do everything I can do to fight Canelo.”

Mbilli also gave Murdock his respect for toughness and skills. “He’s a good fighter, but I’m the best today,” he said.

It was all one-sided action tonight, but Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KO) is a clear and massive step up from the likes of Rohan Murdock, and really anyone else Mbilli has fought to date.

At the moment, it’s expected that Canelo will return on May 4 for Cinco De Mayo weekend, though that’s not official or anything set in stone.

With Canelo still having two fights left on his deal with Premier Boxing Champions, most consider David Benavidez to be the leading contender to land the next fight with the Mexican superstar. Benavidez has the WBC’s “interim” title. But you definitely can’t blame Mbilli for throwing his name out there and making his intentions clear. He wants the big fight. All contenders should.
