Pilot dies in small plane crash in Colonie

COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Colonie Police Department and other agencies are on scene of a small plane crash in the area of Maxwell Road, Albany Shaker Road, and Wolf Road in Colonie. Drivers are asked to avoid the that area.

Maxwell Road is closed from Albany Shaker Road to Old Niskayuna Road. “We are still requesting and urging you to avoid the area until further notice,” said Colonie police.

The Federal Aviation Administration said a twin-engine Piper PA-31 crashed near the end of the runway at Albany International Airport around 8:15 a.m. Only the pilot was on board.

In a press conference, Colonie police said the pilot died in the crash. The plane crashed in a wooded area and there is no danger to the public. There was a fire that was put out quickly after firefighters arrived. Maxwell Road will remain closed for an extended period of time.

Police said a woman in the area who was walking her dog thought she was hit by some debris. She was checked out and has already returned home. You can watch the full press conference below:

Albany International Airport said the crash happened southeast of the airport property. The operations at the airport are unaffected.
