“Last Friday, Rep. Spartz accidentally carried an empty handgun in her suitcase with no magazine or bullets, which she did not realize was in the pocket of her suitcase, while going through security at Dulles airport,” the statement reads.
Transportation Security Administration officers reported finding an unloaded .380-caliber handgun in a passenger’s carry-on bag during a security screening at the airport on Friday, a spokesman said. On Monday, a Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority spokeswoman confirmed that Spartz, of Noblesville, Ind., was the person charged in the incident. The spokeswoman said Spartz was issued a summons to appear in Loudoun County court, but she declined to share more information about the arrest and the charge, citing department policy.
TSA identified an average of 18 guns a day at airport security checkpoints last year, and about 93 percent of the guns were loaded, according to the agency. Authorities say they have seen upticks in the number of guns recovered at Washington-area airports over the past several years.
