Firefighters strengthened their containment on the Sierra fire in Fontana on Sunday evening, June 30, with the blaze having grown to 400 acres.

As of the latest update around 9 p.m., the fire was reported at 400 acres with 80% containment and was no longer threatening homes, said San Bernardino County Fire Department spokesman Eric Sherwin.

While homes had been threatened earlier in the day, no damage was reported and no evacuations were in put in effect.

The fire earlier measured at around 50 acres around 4 p.m.

Two firefighters were hospitalized for treatment of minor injuries, Sherwin said

The fire, named the Sierra fire, prompted the South Coast Air Quality Management District to issue a smoke advisory for areas including Fontana, Jurupa Valley, Bloomington, Rialto, and Colton. The advisory was effective through 3 p.m. Monday.

Residents were urged to limit their exposure to the smoke by remaining indoors with windows and doors closed or by seeking shelter. They were advised to avoid vigorous physical activity and to run their air conditioning and/or air purifiers.

The fire at Martin Tudor Jurupa Hills Regional Park was reported at about 2:45 p.m. near the intersection of Sierra and Jurupa avenues, the Fire Department said.

Southbound Sierra was temporarily closed at Jurupa during the fight against the fire.

Crews planned to remain overnight to continue to contain the fire.
