The latest on Saturday’s storm threat for the Rockford region

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – A tornado watch has been issued for our north/northwestern viewing area as showers and thunderstorms are expected to make their way through this evening with a cold front. These storms have a lot of moisture to use as dewpoints have been in the lower to mid 70s. With so much moisture in our atmosphere, any storm could lead to heavy rainfall making flash flooding a possibility. The timing on these storms is from 5 p.m. in our northwestern counties to 11 p.m. for our southeastern counties. We are under a level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms with tornadoes, flooding, and gusty winds possible. The high moisture content will limit our hail risk with these storms.

The cold front will finally drop our temperatures and dewpoints as Sunday is looking to be fantastic! Highs are in the lower 80s with a clouds early in the morning and sunshine by the afternoon. If you have been couped up inside this week due to the heat, well Sunday is your day to get outside. If you do go outside, don’t forget to put on you sunscreen as our UV index will be very high as the sun is near it’s highest in our sky.

The heat returns Tuesday as highs jump back into the lower 90s. I think we could reach 100 degree heat index values as the dewpoints jump up as well. This heat will also come with some instability as I’m watching a small system accompanying this heat. With this, we could see showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be strong to severe. At this point we are quite a few days out so this is the system I am watching next.
