Indie rock supergroup of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus performed a rousing rendition of their song “Not Strong Enough”
It was a very musical Saturday Night Live this week, as host Timothée Chalamet celebrated the end of the 118-day actors’ strike by singing a portion of his opening monologue as Willy Wonka and then brought back his obnoxious SoundCloud rapper Smoke Chedda Tha A$$ Getta during a “Rap Roundtable” sketch honoring hip hop’s 50th anniversary.
As far as real music goes, there was also the outstanding indie rock supergroup boygenius as the night’s music guest. The trio of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus first graced the SNL stage clad in matching suits and ties — a nod to The Beatles, as well as their Rolling Stone magazine cover honoring Nirvana — to perform their catchy tune “Not Strong Enough.”
“The way I am, not strong enough to be your man/I try, I can’t stop staring at the ceiling fan and/Spinning out about things that haven’t happened/Breathing in and out,” they sang in unison over a symphony of guitars.
The band later returned (again in matching black suits) for a head-banging performance of their song “Satanist,” joined by several backing musicians. With its tonal and signature shifts, the audience was easily won over. At song’s end, Baker tossed her guitar across the stage and the crowd roared with approval.
