Bathinda: To seek a site in Chandigarh for staging protest, a deputation of five farmer organisations — Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal), All India Kisan Federation, Kisan Sangharsh Committee Punjab, BKU (Mansa) and Azad Kisan Sangharsh Committee — met UT deputy commissioner and SSP Chandigarh on Wednesday.
The DC was apprised of organisations’ preparation to launch a morcha in Chandigarh on January 18 on the issues of acute water crisis in the state, attack on the federal system, transfer of Chandigarh to Punjab, environmental pollution and waiver of farmers’ and agriculture workers’ debt. The DC assured the farmers that he would take up the matter with the higher authorities in the central government, and a meeting with the farmer organisations would be convened shortly.
Farmer leaders Balbir Singh Rajewal and Prem Singh Bhangu said they had given memorandums to the central and state government in the last one and half years and organised rallies, but in vain. Now, they were left with no other alternative but to begin an agitation for the redressal of their demands, they added.
