Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Jordan Lawlar tore a ligament in his right thumb and will require surgery, an injury that likely will sideline the club’s top prospect for at least the first two months of the season.

Lawlar, who was slated to open the year with Triple-A Reno, jammed his thumb while trying to pick up a ball off the ground during a minor league spring training game on Sunday, Diamondbacks farm director Shaun Larkin said.

Lawlar will undergo surgery on Thursday and could have a “full return to baseball activity in eight to 10 weeks,” Larkin said.

“We’re expecting a full recovery,” Larkin said. “He’ll be ready to go when the time is right and we expect good things from him once he’s back.”

Lawlar had a ground ball kick off his glove and was reaching down with his throwing hand when the injury occurred.

“It was more of a recovery play,” Larkin said. “He went to pick up the ball off the ground and his thumb jammed into the ground, bent it back and that was it.”

Larkin said imaging revealed a ruptured UCL ligament in his Lawlar’s thumb.

Outfielder Kristian Robinson, another well-regarded prospect in the system, also is expected to be delayed by injury to start the year. He sprained his right shoulder joint when he crashed into the wall on March 16 prior to the Diamondbacks’ Spring Breakout game.

“He’s close to getting back,” Larkin said. “He’s getting better day by day.”
