Fourth Body Found After Baltimore Bridge Collapse

Another body was found on Sunday, April 14 after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in Baltimore, Key Bridge Response Unified Command said in a press release. 

The victim was positively identified by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Monday, April 15, however, at the request of the family, the person’s name will not be disclosed at this time.

Eight construction workers were working on the bridge when it collapsed on March 26. Three of the six bodies were previously found. Two other workers were reportedly able to escape before a cargo ship slammed into the structure.

Unified Command salvage teams found the victim’s vehicle over the weekend and notified the Maryland Department of State Police. The department, the FBI and the Maryland Transportation Authority Police responded and located the deceased victim trapped inside.

“As we mourn the lives lost and continue the recovery operation, we recognize each missing individual is someone’s beloved friend or family member,” said Colonel Roland L. Butler, Jr., Superintendent of the Maryland Department of State Police. 

“Along with all of our allied law enforcement partners, we pledge to exhaust the physical and technical aspects of their training while deploying every available resource possible.”

“Our hearts continue to break for the loved ones of these victims,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said in a statement. “Our entire city remains with them, joining them in mourning and in healing now that one more of their loved ones has been brought home. For those still waiting, we join them in their hope and grief that they will have the same closure soon.”

Roland Butler Jr., superintendent of Maryland State Police, previously said the six victims were from various countries, including Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

The bodies of two workers — Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, of Baltimore, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, of Dundalk — were found on March 27 inside a red pickup truck that was submerged in 25 feet of water.

The body of a third worker, 38-year-old Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval, was found Friday, April 5, according to the Key Bridge Response Team. It is unclear where the remains were located.

All three men were employees of Brawner Builders, which was doing overnight maintenance work on the structure at the time of the deadly collapse, according to a statement previously shared by Jack Murphy.

“Our company is in mourning over the loss of these fine people,” Murphy said at the time. “But of course, our sense of loss cannot in any way compare to what their families are feeling.”

Advanced warning from the cargo ship’s crew may have prevented additional fatalities. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the mayday call allowed officials to “stop the flow of traffic so that more cars were not on the bridge” at the time of the crash and collapse. 

The efforts to stop vehicles from going onto the bridge likely “saved lives,” according to the governor. “These people are heroes,” he added.
