Laura Woods struggled to contain her laughter as Ally McCoist recalled one listener’s direct – and brutal – evaluation of him on air.
Woods was the long-time host of The Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT where she shared the airwaves with McCoist for years before leaving to join TNT Sports as their lead anchor earlier this year.
And the two were reunited in Paris ahead of Newcastle’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain – a game that is live on talkSPORT – when she joined the Breakfast show once again and, with Ally hosting alongside Andy Townsend, Woodsy took the time to compliment him on his abilities.
“You’re getting good at this presenting lark, aren’t you?”
Not everyone agreed, though, as McCoist replied: “Not according to the boy at the station yesterday.”
Explaining his trip across the Channel, he added: “I met Woodsy at the station to come through and we’re having a blether and this boy comes up to us and goes ‘Laura, oh Laura. How are you getting on? I miss you on talkSPORT. I listen to talkSPORT all the time and I really miss you. You’re absolutely fantastic. You’re so good’.
“So Laura says ‘well here’s Ally, he does a bit of talkSPORT as well’ and he turns around and looks at me and says ‘yeah, yeah but not as good as you, Laura!’
“He hit me with a heat-seeking custard pie and then went back to talking to Laura. I was firmly put in my place.”
While Woodsy is no longer with talkSPORT, her replacement will finally begin work on 4 December.
Jeff Stelling, who was the face of Soccer Saturday for years, will be in the hot seat alongside Super Ally.
Woodsy, though, just to make sure the nation understood what the listener was telling Ally, explained she was pretty stunned to hear the verdict on him. Signing off she laughed: “He said ‘you’re not much of a presenter’ – I couldn’t believe it!”
Don’t listen to them, Ally. You’re doing a cracking job!
Jeff Stelling is the new Breakfast show host and will present every Monday and Tuesday mornings from 6 – 10am
