NYC sees record rainfall as cars flooded, commuters trapped

New York City experienced a rainfall record during Saturday’s storm with more than 3.6 inches recorded in Central Park as droves of commuters were flooded on the roads and airlines across the tri-state area experienced delays and cancellations.

One unidentified man and woman were rescued by FDNY firefighters after their black Mercedes Benz became submerged underneath an overpass on the westbound 65th Street Central Park Traverse Saturday.

Photos obtained by The Post show firefighters Eric Roslund Ff. John O’Connor Darren Harsch and Kody Schrum aiding an elderly man across a flooded sidewalk.

The man is then seen being loaded up onto a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance.

In the Bronx, photos showed an SUV stranded in floodwaters on Mosholu Parkway as the owner was seen outside the vehicle on the passenger side.

Several cars were seen driving through heavily flooded zones along the same route.

Also in the Bronx, dramatic images showed a delivery driver struggling with his scooter, dragging it through heavy floodwater.

Across the river in Newark, Doctor Mark Pollack was seen being pulled on a red raft by a Newark Police Emergency Services member after he was stranded in the flooding zone.

Straphangers in the city were not spared either as video captured riders using wooden crates as a “bridge” to brave a flooded train station at the 2nd Avenue F stop at the corner of East Houston and Allen Street.

“Oh, he goes to the Olympics” shouted one rider after a man jumped across both crates and headed to his train.

Also, fliers dealt with a traveling nightmare as 487 flights were delayed and 31 were canceled at John F. Kennedy Airport on Saturday night, according to FlightAware.

The month has also been the sixth wettest March on record, with 8.24 inches already recorded in the park even with another week remaining.

The storm system finally began to blow out of the region in the evening. 

The tri-state area “will continue to dry out overnight until tomorrow” — with a breezy but sunny day expected in the afternoon, Fox New meteorologist Jordan Overton told The Post.

“Thankfully it was kind of spread out so it wasn’t as intense with the flooding,” he said of the “strong coastal storm” —  though some bad flooding was recorded in parts of The Big Apple.
