Liverpool vs Newcastle United

22:08

The full-time whistle brings this absolute thriller to a close, with Liverpool going three points clear at the Premier League summit with a 4-2 win over Newcastle United! After a chaotic first half somehow ended without a goal, the game continued in the same manner in the second period, Salah scoring the opener before Isak levelled on the break, completely against the run of play. Klopp’s team continued to dominate, ultimately racking up 34 shots and 7.27 xG, and goals from Jones and Gakpo looked to have sealed the three points, only for Botman to drag Newcastle back to 3-2 with eight minutes left. However, Salah – who saw a penalty saved in the first half – converted a second spot-kick with four minutes remaining, bowing out with a brace ahead of his trip to the Africa Cup of Nations and finally killing off Howe’s visitors. Both teams are in FA Cup action later this week, with Liverpool visiting Arsenal for a heavyweight clash on Sunday after Newcastle – who have now lost five of their last six league games – go to Sunderland for Saturday’s Tyne–Wear derby! We hope you’ve enjoyed our live coverage of this absorbing contest. Until next time, it’s goodbye from us!

FULL-TIME: LIVERPOOL 4-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

22:02

Liverpool’s xG figure for this match now stands at a massive 7.21, compared to 0.59 for Newcastle. That is the highest figure ever recorded in a Premier League game, and they are about to move three points clear at the top of the table!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:59

Nothing comes of Liverpool’s corner, but the Reds are back in possession and can stroke it around patiently, with Newcastle a beaten team.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:58

Chance for 5-2! Salah has Jota in support as he bursts into the box on the right-hand side, but he looks to sign off with a hat-trick ahead of his trip to the Africa Cup of Nations, ignoring his team-mate and cutting inside to shoot. Botman blocks his strike, then Jota sees the follow-up deflected behind.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:57

Newcastle’s winless run in Premier League action at Anfield is about to reach 28 games. Everton, with an ongoing run against Chelsea, are the only other team to endure a winless away streak of that length against any opponent in the competition.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:53

We will have SEVEN minutes of stoppage time at Anfield! Surely there are no further twists to come?

Salah is the first player to score, assist, miss a penalty and score a penalty in a Premier League game since Wayne Rooney for Everton against Swansea City in February 2017.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:51

Liverpool have now amassed an incredible figure of 6.77 xG in this match! Their second penalty may have been debatable, but they clearly deserve to take the three points.

Newcastle have won their first league game in just one of the last 11 calendar years (three draws, seven losses), winning 1-0 at Stoke City in 2018. However, they’ve never lost against Liverpool on New Year’s Day in three previous meetings, drawing 0-0 in 1913 before winning 9-2 in 1934 and 1-0 in 2003. Can they hold out to maintain that record?

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:33

Newcastle, of course, have suffered late heartache twice in recent memory against Liverpool. Fabio Carvalho scored a 98th-minute winner for the Reds in this exact fixture last August, while they lost by the same scoreline when the teams last met at St James Park in August 2023, Nunez netting two late goals off the bench as Klopp’s men triumphed on Tyneside with 10 men. Does a similar fate await them here? They are hanging on for dear life!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:32

ANOTHER SAVE! Alexander-Arnold’s corner isn’t dealt with and the ball drops for Gakpo near the penalty spot. He takes a touch before driving goalwards, but Dubravka gets down to make the save, and Gravenberch’s follow-up is over! The Newcastle goalkeeper is having an incredible game.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:31

Now Salah scampers to the byline to win a corner for Liverpool. They have had 26 shots and amassed a massive 4.25 xG in this match, but it’s still level!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:30

MORE CHANCES! Salah sets a curling effort out towards the far corner, forcing Dubravka to claw it away. Jones is rushing in to meet the rebound with a firm volley, and Schar has to get back on his goal line to clear! The Liverpool pressure is relentless!

Dubravka again! Liverpool are firmly in the ascendency now with Newcastle penned back in their own box. Diaz tiptoes his away to the D before striking with power, and the visiting goalkeeper beats yet another effort away. It was close to him, but it needed saving!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:23

The rain is still driving down as Jones sends in a shot from the edge of the box. It takes a big deflection off a striped shirt and almost drops for Salah, but Newcastle scramble it away. Liverpool then come again through Diaz, but there’s nobody attacking his low cross from the left! The pace of this game has been absolutely relentless.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:22

Isak’s equaliser came from Newcastle’s second shot of the match, and their first since the eighth minute! Liverpool have let their visitors off time and again, and they have been punished!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:21

Van Dijk commits a cheap foul on Gordon as Liverpool’s frustrations threaten to get the better of them. Alisson claims the cross from the resulting right-wing set-piece with ease, though.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:17

DUBRAVKA DENIES NUNEZ AGAIN! A great ball over the top finds Nunez racing into the area, and he lashes goalwards on the volley. His shot is bound for the top-left corner, but Dubravka springs to his right to push it away!

INCREDIBLE SAVE! Liverpool come forward again with Salah seeing a low shot pushed away by Dubravka. The Reds keep the attack alive as Diaz chips another pass into the path of the Egyptian, who looks to turn provider for Nunez. Endo feeds Nunez on the edge of the area as Liverpool look for a bright start to the second half, but the Uruguayan loses his footing following a poor touch. He decided the reverse fixture by scoring two late goals as a substitute in August, but he has been guilty of missing several good chances in this game.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:09

Liverpool attempted 18 shots in the first half. Only once on record (since 2003-04) have they had more in the opening 45 minutes of a Premier League match without scoring (20 versus Leicester City in December 2015).

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:08

Newcastle get the second half under way at Anfield! Will the second half live up to the entertainment on offer in the first 45 minutes?

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

21:00

The half-time statistics paint a picture of Liverpool dominance. They have managed 18 shots to Newcastle’s one, creating 2.57 xG to the visitors’ 0.06, also racking up 29 touches in the area to the Magpies’ five. Howe’s men are still level, though, and Burn’s disallowed goal was a warning for the hosts – this game remains wide open!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:57

Anthony Taylor is jeered by the home fans as he brings a tempestuous, chance-ridden half of football to an end. Somehow, it’s still goalless between Liverpool and Newcastle at Anfield. The Reds were utterly dominant for the first half-hour, missing a golden opportunity to go ahead in the 23rd minute as Dubravka kept out Salah’s penalty and Alexander-Arnold blazed over from the rebound. Through Nunez and Burn, both teams have seen goals chalked off for offside, while Alexander-Arnold hit the underside of the crossbar with a quite ridiculous volley from a tight angle. Klopp’s team began to lose their heads as the half-time whistle approached, though, picking up a series of needless bookings as Newcastle scrapped their way back into the contest. Is more of the same to follow after the break? We certainly hope so!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:53

HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL 0-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:51

Unlucky! Now Diaz teases a ball over the Newcastle backline, looking for Szoboszlai. It’s the right idea, but he’s just eased out of it by Botman and Dubravka can scoop up the loose ball.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:50

Klopp is not happy with the officiating of this game, giving the fourth official a piece of his mind as Konate becomes the latest Liverpool player to be fouled. Newcastle have grown into this contest in the last 15 minutes or so, and they’ve frustrated Liverpool by breaking up the game with tactical fouls.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:48

We’re into five minutes of stoppage time at Anfield, where the first 45 minutes have absolutely flown by!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:48

Yellow Card Lewis Miley

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:47

Van Dijk isn’t happy with Alexander-Arnold, who just switches off and almost allows Isak to break in behind. The Dutchman recovers to make a vital challenge on the Newcastle striker before giving his team-mate a piece of his mind.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:47

Yellow Card Luis Fernando Díaz Marulanda

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:46

Joelinton somehow escapes a booking for the most cynical pull of a shirt you’ll ever see, sending Szoboszlai down. Liverpool get the advantage as the attack develops and the Hungarian gets up to see a long-range shot blocked by Schar.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:44

OFF THE WOODWORK! INCREDIBLE! Alexander-Arnold goes so, so close to scoring one of the great Premier League goals. Receiving a crossfield pass right on the byline, outside the box, he hits a brilliant volley which dips over Dubravka but just clips the underside of the bar before flying to safety. That was Marco van Basten-esque!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:43

OFFSIDE – NO GOAL! Both teams have had a goal chalked off for offside now! The VAR takes a long look at the incident before concluding that Isak was just leaning ahead of Konate as he received Joelinton’s pass! Somehow, it’s still 0-0!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:41

THE BALL IS IN THE NET, BUT IT WON’T COUNT! Newcastle counterattack at devastating speed as Joelinton breaks the lines with a pass into Isak. He works it wide for Gordon to cross from the right, and stand-in captain Burn arrives to power his header past Alisson! The away end erupts, but their joy is cut short by another offside flag! This one will be checked, it was very, very close!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:40

STUNNING DOUBLE SAVE! How are Liverpool not ahead? Nunez chases Schar and latches onto a loose touch from the Newcastle defender to bear down on Dubravka’s goal. The Uruguayan should make it 1-0, but his side-footed attempt is smothered by the Newcastle goalkeeper. Liverpool keep it alive and Nunez gets another chance to strike from the edge of the box, and Dubravka beats this one away as well!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:37

Only Steven Gerrard (nine) and Michael Owen (seven) have failed to convert more Premier League penalties for Liverpool than Salah (six), who has now failed to convert four of his last nine in the competition.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:36

Longstaff raids forward again as Newcastle enjoy a better spell. He slips a pass through for Miley, but Van Dijk tracks the youngster well and Alisson is able to clear away.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:34

Incredibly, Liverpool have had 14 shots to Newcastle’s one so far, amassing 1.97 expected goals (xG) by the 32-minute mark. The Reds have been utterly dominant, but they have nothing to show for it after Salah’s spot-kick was saved by Dubravka.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:33

Offside! Newcastle manage their first break in a long time as Isak tries to play Gordon in, only for Alisson to reach the loose ball first. However, his weak clearance puts Liverpool back under pressure and Longstaff slips a pass in behind for Isak to shoot… but the flag goes up as Konate makes the block.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:32

Alexander-Arnold crosses from the latest Liverpool set-piece, and Van Dijk heads against the arm of Joelinton. The VAR takes a quick look at the incident, but his arm was in a completely natural position. No penalty.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:29

Block! Szoboszlai lifts the corner to Alexander-Arnold on the edge of the box, but he’s unable to shoot after chesting the ball down, instead lifting it back into the area. Van Dijk hits it on the turn, and it’s deflected behind for another set-piece. This one comes to nothing.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:29

Yellow Card Bruno Guimarães Rodriguez Moura

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:28

Good defending! Diaz slips a clever pass infield as Jones makes the run towards the edge of the six-yard box before shooting, but Miley tracks him all the way to deflect it behind for a corner. It’s still all Liverpool.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:27

Liverpool continue to press for the opener as Jones shoots from range, but it’s straight at Dubravka. The Newcastle ‘keeper will be absolutely delighted at stopping Salah’s penalty – the kick was much to close to him, but he needed to get a strong hand to it!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:25

SAVED! DUBRAVKA DENIES SALAH! Wow! Salah blasts the kick to Dubravka’s left as he looks for his 150th Premier League goal for Liverpool, but the Newcastle goalkeeper springs across to push it away! Alexander-Arnold looks certain to convert from the rebound… but he sends an awful volley spiralling over the crossbar! What a left-off for the visitors!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:24

The VAR check is over and the penalty stands! Botman caught Diaz from behind, and Salah has a chance to open the scoring from 12 yards!

PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL! After being denied the opening goal, Diaz wins a spot-kick for Liverpool! The Colombian takes a pass in his stride and skips beyond Botman, who lunges in desperately as the Colombian faces up to Dubravka. The winger goes down and Anthony Taylor points to the spot! Again, the VAR will check this decision, as Diaz’s fall looked a little delayed.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:21

NO GOAL! The VAR check is over and the on-pitch decision stands! Nunez was just ahead of Burn as he darted onto Jones’ throughball, and it remains goalless!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:20

GOAL, BUT WAIT, THE FLAG IS UP! Anfield erupts as Diaz converts for what appears to be the opening goal, but the linesman’s flag cuts the celebrations short! Jones slides a neat ball in behind for Nunez, who unselfishly offloads to his left for Diaz to side-foot home, but offside is the on-field decision. It looks mightily close, though… the VAR will check this!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:19

Over! Alexander-Arnold swings the free-kick in for Nunez, who sends his header over the top from 12 yards out. Dubravka had that one covered.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:18

Guimaraes is caught out by Endo in midfield, with the Japan international beating his opponent to a loose ball before inviting a foul. Alexander-Arnold is over the dead ball 35 yards from goal, though it’s in an awkward area, slightly right-of-centre.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:17

Salah’s next Premier League goal will be his 150th for Liverpool, making him the fifth player to reach the milestone with a single club in the competition, after Harry Kane for Tottenham, Sergio Aguero for Manchester City, Wayne Rooney for Manchester United and Thierry Henry for Arsenal. He’s scored in five of his six appearances against Newcastle at Anfield in the competition. Can they keep him quiet this time?

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:16

This is Liverpool’s final game before Salah joins up with the Egypt squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. He has looked lively early on and almost created the opener there, though the VAR may have taken a look at it for offside, had Nunez converted.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:14

GREAT SAVE! Dubravka comes through the crowd to punch the corner away, but Newcastle quickly concede possession again and Alexander-Arnold fires a great pass into Nunez. The Uruguayan exchanges passes with Salah on the right side of the box before flicking goalwards, and Dubvraka gets down to tip it away. It comes out to Jones, but his strike on the rebound is charged down!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:13

Now Livramento concedes a corner with a lunging challenge on the rampaging Gomez. We’ve not had time to breathe yet – it’s been a high-octane start with both teams looking to press high and create openings.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:11

That’s so poor. Longstaff sends an awful corner directly behind. Newcastle need to make the most of any set-piece chances in what is likely to be a frantic contest.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:10

Chance! Liverpool play themselves into trouble as Newcastle steal possession high up the pitch from an Alisson goal-kick. Isak works it right to Miley as Gordon’s run takes a defender away… but Gomez gets across to block his shot behind for a corner.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:09

That’s better from Newcastle as Gordon darts through midfield before being scythed down by Gomez, who is again deputising at left-back. He avoids the game’s first booking, though, and the Magpies fail to make anything of their deep free-kick.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:08

Liverpool have won their last five Premier League games against Newcastle and are unbeaten in 14 against them since a 2-0 loss in December 2015 (10 wins, four draws).

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:08

This has been a really positive start from Liverpool, who clearly smell blood against their out-of-form and injury-hit opponents. The Reds win another free-kick on the left flank, but Szoboszlai’s delivery is too close to Dubravka.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:06

Liverpool fail to make anything of the game’s first corner, but they keep the pressure on as Gordon trips Jones just outside the box in a crossing position. Alexander-Arnold’s set-piece delivery is cleared, then Livramento finally eases the pressure by winning a free-kick for his team.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:04

CLOSE! Liverpool continue to pen Newcastle back as Diaz crosses from the left side of the box. It takes a deflection and is helped into the air by Burn, but only drops for Alexander-Arnold, who lashes goalward. His left-footed strike takes a ricochet off Botman and drops just wide of the bottom-left corner!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:03

Liverpool are on the front foot immediately! Salah darts infield from the right to feed Endo, who plays a pass into Szoboszlai inside a crowded penalty area. The Hungarian looks to shoot on his left foot, but it’s blocked at close quarters.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:02

After a typically passionate rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone rings around Anfield, we’re under way for the first time in the Premier League this year! Nunez gets the ball rolling for Liverpool.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

20:01

Liverpool have failed to win their first league game in any of the last three calendar years (one draw, two defeats), going down 3-1 at Brentford in 2023. Will they make a positive start to 2024 as they attempt to pull clear at the summit? The players are out – we’re about to find out!

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

19:53

Howe, meanwhile, makes two changes to the side beaten by Forest last time out. Kieran Trippier misses out through injury as Livramento takes his place at right-back, while Joelinton is preferred to out-of-form wideman Almiron. The Magpies’ selection problems continue to bite with Callum Wilson ruled out due to a calf issue, joining Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock, Elliot Anderson and Matt Target in the treatment room.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

19:49

Klopp makes four changes to the Liverpool side which won at Turf Moor on Boxing Day, with Konate returning to the heart of the Reds’ defence in place of Quansah, while Szoboszlai and Jones come in for Elliott and Gravenberch in midfield. Diaz replaces Gakpo in attack, likely allowing Nunez to start through the middle, while Mac Allister is back among the substitutes after missing six games due to a nasty cut to his knee.
