San Diego police have issued a warning to techies after a man was caught in a viral video crossing the street with an Apple Vision Pro headset strapped to his face.
Footage that went viral on Instagram over the weekend showed a man casually crossing a street downtown while peering into the screen and accessing a virtual menu with his hands as police detained another person on the corner.
“A video making its rounds online shows our patrol team in Central Division ‘face-to-face’ with the future – a pedestrian donning the latest Apple Vision Pro headset while walking in the street downtown,” the San Diego Police Department said in a social media post.
“It was a sight that had us pausing in bewilderment. While we’re all for exploring new dimensions and technology, let’s remember the importance of pedestrian safety,” police said.
Later on Monday, the Instagram account San Diego Humor posted a video from the point of view of the man — identified as city resident Vlad Kislov — revealing that he was changing a song on the virtual reality gizmo.
The song “Break My Stride” by Matthew Wilder played in the background.
“Keep those virtual experiences on the sidewalk, folks, and let’s cross streets the old-fashioned way – with our eyes wide open to the real world, unobstructed and without distractions!” police said.
Apple has sold 200,000 pairs of the controversial goggles, which cost $3,500. The new tech’s supporters have declared it the latest and greatest innovation while others have complained about headaches and motion sickness after using it.
