This breakfast has the exact nutritional makeup to cure your hangover

If you over-indulged in the spiked egg nog or one too many hot toddies, you may be feeling it.

But instead of chowing down on a decadent stack of flapjacks or a greasy diner spread, an expert has revealed the best breakfast to cure the head-pounding, stomach-curdling hangover plaguing your morning.

Cara Shaw, a registered women’s health nutritional therapist, told Metro it’s vital to eat a vitamin- and antioxidant-packed brekkie within 90 minutes of waking to get blood sugar levels back to equilibrium.

“If you’ve been boozing all day long, particularly on lots of beer or high-sugar cocktails or sugary mixers, it’s likely that your blood sugar will be going haywire into the early hours,” she said.

“When it comes to the liver, the alcohol will be putting a lot of pressure on the liver so detoxification will need additional support. You can get this from adequate protein but also B vitamins and antioxidants.”

To do this, she recommends a hearty, three-egg breakfast —  hello, protein — with half an avocado, feta, tomatoes, half a cup of sautéed mushrooms and olive oil.

According to Shaw, eggs, high in choline, help detoxify the liver, while mushrooms contain liver-supporting B vitamins and avocados have nutrient-rich fat. Feta, also a protein source, is jam-packed with B12 for a morning-after energy boost, while both tomatoes and olive oil have anti-inflammatory properties to combat the ill effects of boozing.

Recipe

  • 3 eggs cooked any way you like
  • ½ cup of sautéed mushrooms in olive oil
  • ½ avocado
  • A sprinkle of feta
  • A handful of cooked tomatoes
  • Drizzle of olive oil
  • Guzzling holiday cocktails could result in dehydration, inflammation, headaches, stomach problems, poor sleep, nausea and, as some unfortunate boozers know, vomiting, to name a few.

And when it comes to a morning beverage, Shaw suggested that matcha trumps coffee.

“Matcha is much lower in caffeine than coffee and is absolutely packed with antioxidants to give the body a boost,” she said. “My top tip is to have your caffeinated drink after a meal to ensure it doesn’t spike your cortisol levels, even more important when hungover.”

While Safety Shot has created a beverage to cure a hangover — which works by decreasing blood alcohol content quickly — other remedies include intravenous drip treatments, bone broth, ginger, certain amino acids and dihydromyricetin supplements.

However, experts have debunked the cure-all hacks — the only way to rid yourself of a nasty hangover is to wait it out, or avoid alcohol in the first place.

“The best way to deal with next morning’s symptoms is to prevent them from happening in the first place,” Dr. Fu Chen, the head of research and development at More Labs, previously told The Post.

Luckily, this soon may not be an issue for those participating in Dry January, who can sip on zero-proof mocktails and not worry about the dreaded hangover.
