Lynch met Emily when she appeared in Inland Empire, and they later married in February 2009.

She gave birth to the couple’s first and only child together in 2012, when Lynch was 66.

During Emily’s pregnancy the pair released a statement that read: ‘The couple are thrilled at the news and looking forward to meeting their first child together.’

This is the Mulholland Drive filmmaker’s fourth marriage. He was previously married to Mary Sweeney from 2006–2007, Mary Fisk from 1977–1987, and Peggy Lynch from 1967–1974.

Lula is the acclaimed director’s fourth child.

He shares daughter Jennifer, 55, who is also a director, with first wife Peggy, 76. He also shares son Austin, 41 – an actor – with second wife Mary, and son Riley, 31 – a musician – with third wife Mary Sweeney, 70.

Lynch previously revealed that his tendency to prioritize his work caused him to not always be the best husband and father, in a 2018 interview with The Guardian.

‘You gotta be selfish. And it’s a terrible thing. I never really wanted to get married, never really wanted to have children. One thing leads to another and there it is.’

‘I did what I had to do. There could have been more work done. There are always so many interruptions,’ he added.

Sweeney worked with Lynch as the co-writer and producer of The Straight Story, but they divorced in July 2006 after just one month of marriage.

He also dated Italian actress Isabella Rossellini for four years after meeting on the set of Blue Velvet.

Lynch is best known as a filmmaker whose work often has turned into cult classics, including The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and the television series Twin Peaks.

Arguably, Lynch’s greatest success behind the camera was with the Elephant Man (1980), a historical drama film that received eight Academy Award nominations and starred John Hurt as John Merrick, a man suffering with severe deformity, and Anthony Hopkins as the doctor who takes Merrick out of a freak show.
